 After experiencing a series of professional disappointments in his hometown of Glasgow, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (Scottish, 1868-1928) left the city and settled in London in 1915. There he began creating designs for fine fabrics, many of which he sold to England's two leading textile producers.  In 1896 Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) won a competition to design a new building for the Glasgow School of Art. That success brought him commissions for everything from mansions to tearooms. Mackintosh remained in Glasgow for two decades, designing buildings, furniture, textiles, and wallpapers. Then he left Glasgow and retired to painting landscapes in the south of France. This calendar plucks a dozen paintings and designs--among them Orvieto Cathedral: North Elevation; The Little Bay, Port Vendres; and Mont Louis Flower Study--from his brilliant, wide-ranging oeuvre. |
